‘Are you listening David’: Bad Allard-vice as Big Sam sends no-nonsense message to Sullivan

Sam Allardyce has sent a very strong message to West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan about David Moyes.

Former West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce worked under David Sullivan for four years at Upton Park from 2011 to 2015, before being replaced by Slaven Bilic.

David Moyes then took over from Bilic in November 2017 before being moved on six months later. However, the Scot returned to the London Stadium in December 2019, and has managed to completely transform us as a club.

That said, his tactics have become stale and unambitious, leading to calls from the West Ham fans for him to be moved on.

Moyes’s current situation is eerily similar to that of Allardyce’s at West Ham nine years ago. The fans grew tired of Big Sam’s approach to tactics and playing style.

Allardyce famously hit out at the Hammers fans and labelled us as ‘deluded’ after he left the club, suggesting that he didn’t actually know what the ‘West Ham way’ was, as quoted by the Guardian:

“As soon as I was appointed manager in 2011 the big debate was whether I would follow the ‘West Ham way’, which nobody could define, but, whatever it was, I apparently didn’t play it.”

“I felt the West Ham way was about wearing your heart on your sleeve and showing passion for the club and winning. But the fans were being brainwashed into thinking that, historically, the club had a particular style of play which was akin to Barcelona, which was potty.”

“I once called the supporters deluded and I stand by that. I don’t know who invented the West Ham way phrase, but it’s a millstone around the club’s neck.”

Those comments were a huge insult to the Hammers fans who’d grown up watching the likes of Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst and then in later years Trevor Brooking, Alan Devonshire, Paolo Di Canio and Carlos Tevez.

The 69-year-old clearly didn’t get what it meant to be a West Ham fan. And I’m not sure David Moyes does either…

Sam Allardyce sends no-nonsense message to David Sullivan

The former Hammers manager certainly isn’t a popular figure in East London.

His dire playing style and and dismissive nature when discussing the ‘West Ham way’ has ensured that he’ll go down in history as one of our least popular gaffers of all-time.

He is the antithesis of what the Hammers are about as a club, so excuse me for not taking one single thing he says about us seriously.

Big Sam seems to be obsessed with us, and he clearly still has a grudge about being moved on in 2015, rather than being offered a new deal.

Moyes is in a similar boat right now as far as his contract is concerned. He’s deal is set to expire in the summer, with no new contract forthcoming as things stand.

And now one of our former managers has weighed into the debate about a potential new deal for the 60-year-old Scot…

Allardyce has simple message for Hammers owner

The former England boss was surprised when Stuart Pearce suggested that there is even a chance that Moyes may not be handed a new deal.

“Have they done his contract yet then?”

Pearce responded by saying ‘I don’t think so no’, to which Allardyce retorted:

“Ooooh, don’t start that again. Are you listening David, just get him signed up will you! They did that with me. We were fourth in the league in December, and everybody was talking about my contract which was a massive distraction. I just decided I’m going to leave in the end.”

Another clueless take from a dinosaur who’s stuck in a bygone era it seems.

The thing is, there is this misconception that the Hammers fans demand too much, and it’s utter rubbish.

Before our Europa Conference League triumph last year, we hadn’t won a major trophy since 1980, yet the fans followed the team in their droves home and away.

We sold out our stadium week in, week out. There are two things that we do expect – 100% commitment from our players and the ambition from the manager to at least try and win every game we play.

Moyes definitely doesn’t satisfy the latter. His turgid brand of anti-football has become incredibly tiresome to watch, and fans paying good money to see it have every right to complain, despite the undoubted success that he’s brought to the club.

Sam Allardyce sent a strong message to David Sullivan about what he should do with Moyes’s contract but he’s missed the point badly.

The Scot has taken us as far as he can, I have absolutely no doubts about that. And if Sullivan really wants us to make genuine progress as a club, I suggest that he doesn’t listen to Allardcye’s advice.
