Victoria Beckham's honest five-word response to marriage troubles with husband David

The Beckhams have endured extreme highs and lows during their 24 years of marriage.

Former footballer David and fashion designer Victoria, who turns 50 today, tied the knot in 1999 and their showstopping showbiz wedding was the talk of the town. But their relationship faced scrutiny in the public eye with cheating claims and split rumours aplenty during the early days.

The Spice Girls star and Manchester United player went on to have four children together - sons Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19, and daughter Harper, 12. Last year, the couple gave a rare insight into their personal lives in their Netflix series Beckham, with Victoria making a tearful admission about their romance.

The series touched on the 2004 allegations made by David's former PA Rebecca Loos, who claimed she had an affair with him whilst he was playing for Real Madrid. Other women made other allegations too, all of which David described as "ludicrous". But it hit Posh and Becks hard, with Victoria issuing a five-word response in the documentary: "We were against each other."

When director Fisher Stevens asked David: "Multiple tabloid stories broke, and how did you deal with that?", Beckham replied: "There were some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with. It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage."

Stevens then asked Victoria if that was the hardest time in their marriage, to which she replied: "100 percent. It was the hardest period for us. Because it felt like the world was against us. And here's the thing; we were against each other, if I'm being completely honest. You know, up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like us against everybody else. But we were together. We were connected. We had each other."

She continued: "But when we were in Spain, it didn't really feel that we had each other either. And that's sad. I can't even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me."

At the peak of the crisis, David said it felt like they were "drowning" and he admitted: "I don't know how we got through it in all honesty." But the pair got their relationship back on track and will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary this summer.

They agree that filming the Netflix series was a form of 'therapy' and Victoria has made 'peace' with parts of their history. She said on the show: "I feel at peace with a lot of what maybe in our first session was still a lot of pent-up anger, frustration. I understand it now." Beckham agreed and said: "It has been some form of therapy this, when I've looked back."

At the end of the series, the couple was shown at home together alongside their children dancing to Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton's hit Islands in the Stream. Becoming emotional, Beckham welled up in front of his wife and said: "Going through every part of my life, it has given me clarity on many things. And one of the things, which is the most important thing to me is what we've got."
