Amsterdam to cut number of visiting river cruise ships by half

Amsterdam plans to drastically reduce the number of river cruise ships that are allowed to dock in the city.

The number of vessels is to be halved within five years, the city announced on Tuesday evening. The city estimates that around 270,000 fewer tourists will visit the city each year as a result.

From 2028, only a maximum of 1,150 ships will be able to dock. In 2023, there were 2,125 with around 500,000 passengers.

In addition to reducing visitor numbers, the city hopes that the reduction will also reduce air pollution.

"River cruises contribute to crowding and exhaust fumes in the city through tourists, overnight stays, bus journeys and deliveries," the city authorities said. Many passengers stay overnight in a hotel in Amsterdam before or after a cruise.

It is the latest in a series of measures introduced by the Dutch capital against mass tourism.

Amsterdam decided last year to ban large seaworthy cruise ships and ordered that the terminal be moved outside the city.
