Spurs reportedly frontrunners for 'eye-catching' £69m midfielder who's been compared to Kevin De Bruyne

Tottenham Hotspur are still in the picture for a Premier League top-four spot, but they’ve made life harder for themselves over the past few days.

Spurs fell to a dismal 4-0 defeat at Newcastle last Saturday to slip out of the top four on goal difference.

The following day, Aston Villa ran out 2-0 winners at Arsenal, a result that Tottenham fans loved and hated in equal measure.

Although the fourth-placed Villans dented the Gunners’ title hopes, they’ve also opened up a three-point gap between themselves and Spurs.

Needless to say, Tottenham may have improved a lot compared to last season, but there’s still a lot of work to do in putting together a top squad.

With that in mind, we’re likely to see Spurs take part in a lot of business in the summer transfer window.

According to Football Transfers, Spurs are frontrunners to sign Hugo Larsson from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer.

More recently, GiveMeSport have reported that the 19-year-old has caught Tottenham’s eye while they’ve been assessing whether some of the Bundesliga’s top talents could make it in the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou has apparently pinpointed Larsson as another regular performer in the Bundesliga who has a bright future ahead of him.

The report also relayed information from BILD claiming his employers are confident their player has the potential to be worth £69million.

What would Hugo Larsson bring to Tottenham Hotspur?

Larsson has been a revelation for Frankfurt since joining from Malmo in a £7.6million deal last summer.

He has already clocked up 33 appearances, registering three goals and four assists. He has also won four caps for Sweden.

Last year, the Bundesliga website likened Larsson to Manchester City duo Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne.

They wrote: ‘By trade, Larsson is most comfortable at the base of midfield, protecting his defence. As well as an expert breaker-up-of-play, Larsson also has the technical ability to break lines and thread killer through balls.

‘Larsson’s 6’1″ frame gives him great presence and his athleticism is eye-catching, underlined by his rapid turn of pace – a unique trait for a player often seen shielding those further back and one which suggests the 18-year-old could easily play as either a No.6 or No.8.

‘There are shades of Spanish holding midfielder Rodri in Larsson’s game, while his close control and skilfulness also has notes of Rodri’s Manchester City teammate Kevin de Bruyne, who once starred for both Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg in Germany’s top tier.

‘It’s a combination for Eintracht and Sweden fans to get excited about.’
