A NASCAR romantic comedy movie is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios. According to Deadline, Victoria Mahoney has been tapped to direct the film Clean Air from Westbrook Studios, The Chainsmokers’ Kick The Habit Productions and NASCAR.

The film, written by Alison Rose Greenberg, follows Lyala, a sports agent who loses her superstar client before the start of the NASCAR season. It leads to her taking a chance on a 17-year-old female dirt track racer, Piper. Lyala needs to get Piper NASCAR-ready but also reform Piper’s father, Matthew Kyte, a former NASCAR champion who walked away from the sport and hasn’t been seen in four years.

Will Smith will produce the movie with Jon Mone on behalf of Westbrook Studios alongside Dan Marcus of Kick the Habit Productions. The executive producers are Heather Washington, Drew Taggart, Alex Pall, Adam Alpert, Tim Clark (for NASCAR) and Matt Summers.

NASCAR also doing big things in streaming

The news of the NASCAR rom-com film comes after the series NASCAR: Full Speed, debuted on Netflix. The docuseries took a look at the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season, in which Ryan Blaney won the championship.

“This is the most competitive form of motorsport on the planet,” Clark told Tudum in January. “People are going to see it up close, and see the beating and the banging and the aggressiveness of the drivers, but also the skill of the drivers — and what they’re able to do with a race car [driving at] 200 miles an hour, around 38 other race cars, hitting the same spot for 400 miles.”

Clark also told PEOPLE in January: “NASCAR has kicked down the door to an entirely new era recently — with new tracks, cars, team owners and stars combining to deliver some of the best competition the sport has ever seen.” Clark added that he’s excited “to introduce people to the characters, competition and chaos that make NASCAR so compelling, while still giving our most passionate fans plenty of new insights into their favorite teams and drivers.”

NASCAR is in the early stages of the 2024 Cup Series season. In the current standings, Kyle Larson, who won the title in 2021, sits on top and is followed by Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott and William Byron. On Sunday, the drivers will compete in the Geico 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama.
