G7 foreign ministers meet to discuss Middle East and Ukraine

The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) economically strong democracies are due to meet to discuss further sanctions on Iran on Thursday in view of the threat of a wide conflict in the Middle East.

The major Iranian attack on Israel at the weekend is one of the dominant topics at the meeting on the Italian Mediterranean island of Capri.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called on Iran and Israel to show "maximum restraint" ahead of the meeting. "A spiral of escalation would serve no one," she said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba are also expected to attend the meeting in the afternoon.

Against the backdrop of the massive Russian attacks on Ukraine, the round table plans to discuss better air defence support.

The meeting is scheduled to last until Friday.

Italy is chairing the G7 group this year.

The United States, Canada, Britain, France, Japan and the European Union are also taking part.

More than 1,300 police officers and other security forces are deployed on the island in the Gulf of Naples to protect the ministers.
