Karate sensei Janet Farrell launches women-only defence classes in Newark

A karate sensei is set to launch a women-only self defence class to promote safety and empowerment.

Janet Farrell, 73, of Newark, will launch the first class on Monday, May 6 - and the initial session is free to attend.

Janet has a wealth of karate expertise — including earning her third dan black belt in 2022, three national third place ranks in individual kumite, three ladies team kumite wins, and a national silver in team kumite — but her classes are suitable for any age or fitness level, including beginners.

Janet Farrell has over 38 years of karate experience.

The class will focus on ‘body mechanics’ and ‘situational awareness’ to get out of dangerous situations.

Janet said: “I want to encourage women to feel strong in themselves and empowered.

“I want to help women feel safe in their everyday lives. I feel extremely passionate about women's safety.”

Running a self defence class has been a long-time dream for the sensei, who wants to prove that age is not a barrier and you can do anything you put your mind to.

Janet originally joined a self defence class in 1985 with her eldest daughter Sonia, before taking up karate.

She found herself loving the confidence it had given her, and has now trained in Shotokan karate for over 38 years.

In 1995 Janet also started to teach children on a Sunday afternoon in a bid to make a difference in people's lives, by helping them improve their confidence and skills that they could take with them into their everyday lives.

The classes will be run on Mondays from 10am to 11am at Millgate Community Centre.

For more information, anyone interested in the classes can contact Chris from Newark Shotokan Karate Club on 07970020046.
