TV star battled addictions and 'faced worst fear' before losing hundreds of pounds

When TLC viewers first met My 600-lb Life star Charles Bridgeman he relied on his family members to stay alive. Speaking to cameras, Charles explains how he rarely gets out of bed, and has his meals prepared by his sister. He lives “for free” with his siblings who feel it’s their responsibility to look after him.

Charles’ My 600-lb Life episode kicks off by showing viewers his everyday life. A breakfast of five eggs with cheese, biscuits, and seven sausages is on the menu before he meets Dr Now. Despite making progress with his weight loss on the TLC show, Charles ends up infuriating viewers who say his episode was a “waste of time” much like Shakyia’s episode last week.

My 600-lb Life’s Charles Bridgeman

During April 17’s My 600-lb episode, fans meet a new patient of Dr Now’s – Charles Bridgeman.

Charles battled with addiction in his past. After kicking his drug addiction, he unfortunately replaced it with food until his weight got out of control.

He turns to Dr Now for help losing weight but hits roadblocks along the way.

Charles faces his fears

Before Charles meets Dr Now on My 600-lb Life, fans see him struggling.

He faces his “worst fear” by boarding a plane to Houston, and says: “I knew this wasn’t going to be easy, but now I’m starting to see the reality of it.”

Charles felt “everyone was staring” at him and said he was totally out of his comfort zone.

He said: “I can feel my breath starting to get shorter, how am I even going to fit in my seat?”

Losing confidence in himself, Charles added how his “knees were exploding with pain” and said: “I have no choice but to hold out, because if Dr Now can’t help me, I’m going to die anyway.”

He’s still losing weight

TLC viewers see tensions flare when Charles and Dr Now catch up via video call.

During the episode, Dr Now has some stern words for his patient who decides to close the laptop while his doctor is still speaking.

Charles says he’s “about to blow up” as Dr Now breaks down his excuses for not showing up to his clinic appointments.

Although he lost enough weight to get approved for surgery, Charles opted out of the procedure. He didn’t want to leave his family and move to Houston.

Per his Facebook page, he still continued to lose weight himself outside the show.

He wrote in September last year that he was “down to 385,” and added in the comments how he went to his first job interview.
