Cambridgeshire pupils and students camp out to raise money for children in Gaza appeal

Children from Cambridgeshire have committed to camping out for one night in the cold and wet this month to raise funds for children in Gaza, hoping others will join them.

Concerned about reports of young people starving and in desperate need of food and clean water, students from the Histon and Impington village primary schools and at Impington Village College, plus two children in Bedfordshire and a four-year old in Scotland, have agreed to pitch up tents in their gardens or sleep in dens in their front rooms on Saturday (20 April) with all money raised going to UNICEF’s children in Gaza crisis appeal.

Lara Brettell and her daughter Amaike, from Histon, came up with the Kids Camp For Kids in Gaza Challenge after discussing the desperate situation in the region – 10 children have now signed up and have raised more than £2,000, surpassing their original target.

“I can’t imagine what they’re going through,” 13 year-old Amaike explains. “No one should experience that but I am happy about the money we have raised so far. It’s more than I expected, which is good."

“We just wanted to do something,” added Ettie Lock, also 13 and from Impington. “Camping out might be a bit cold in April or uncomfortable but it’s nothing compared to what children our age and younger are going through right now in Gaza.”

“It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a garden to camp out in,” Ettie adds. “You could create a tent or den in your lounge with pillows and blankets to sleep under. That’s a really good idea for younger kids I think and they can get friends and family to sponsor them to do it. It’s still a challenge and it’s all about raising awareness and money for a good cause."
