Arsenal fans hailed for 'one positive' thing they did at Allianz Arena v Bayern Munich

Arsenal supporters travelled to Germany in their droves to watch their side take on Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

Arsenal were on the continent to face Bayern Munich in the second-leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash.

This was a must-win game for both sides, as the scores were level at 2-2 on aggregate after the first-leg in North London last week. Only victory could send the Gunners through to the Champions League semi-finals.

However, the Gunners were unable to get the job done. They slumped to a 1-0 defeat in Munich. Three Arsenal players were blamed for switching off as Joshua Kimmich powered a header past David Raya in the second half. After they fell behind, Arsenal never really looked likely to get back into the game, despite their away following still urging them forward right to the very end.

Arteta called upon the Arsenal fans to generate a raucous atmosphere against Porto in the previous round of the competition, and will have wanted more of the same in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal were given a boost in the first-leg against Bayern Munich as supporters of the German giants were not allowed inside the Emirates Stadium. At the Allianz Arena, the Gunners faithful would have to work much harder to make their voices heard.

In the first half especially, the North Londoners who had made the trip to Munich were in fine voice. Sky Sports (17/04/2024, 20:46) journalist, Oliver Yew, was impressed by the fans as Arteta’s team dominated possession and territory in the opening period of the game. He pointed out, “one positive, however, is you can now hear the Arsenal fans. The Allianz Arena isn’t silenced, but the noise you can hear from the away fans is a sign Mikel Arteta’s side have done a good job so far.”

Ultimately, by the time the final whistle rang out at the Allianz Arena, the Gunners faithful were disappointed. Arsenal fans were frustrated by Bukayo Saka’s display, and will have expected far more from their team in the final third.

Many Arsenal supporters also took issue with a statement that the club made after their elimination from Europe’s elite club competition last night.
