‘I’m sure’: Dean Ashton thinks West Ham could hire ‘special’ manager if David Moyes leaves

Dean Ashton has named a potential candidate for West Ham United should David Moyes decide to leave this summer.

David Moyes is facing an uncertain future at West Ham, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The Scotsman is undoubtedly the Hammers’ most successful manager of the Premier League era after delivering a Europa Conference League title last season.

Moyes has guided West Ham into Europe on three occasions but his time in east London could be coming to an end.

West Ham fans have grown frustrated with their pragmatic style of play this season, despite the club currently being eighth in the league.

Moyes departing this summer has been labelled ‘likely’ in recent days and former Hammers striker Dean Ashton has named a potential replacement.

Ashton suggest Graham Potter could replace Moyes

Speaking on talkSPORT, Ashton reacted to news that Moyes looks set to leave West Ham at the end of the season.

While the former West Ham man sympathises with Moyes, he suggested his old club could look at hiring someone like Graham Potter.

“I think it would be a job that many managers would want,” Ashton said. “If they’re looking at a very different style, which is the thing that’s being questioned of David Moyes I don’t think it’s the success that he’s brought to the club, then you’re looking at maybe a Graham Potter type of manager.

“He could be someone that I’m sure they’ll look at. There will be plenty of others I’m sure that’ll want the job.

“But it will be down to David Moyes and I just wonder whether he’s almost had enough in terms of, what more can do? Bringing European football, bringing a trophy, bringing top half of the Premier League year in year out.

“He probably thinks what is the point of me being here? It feels like a really big decision for the club and David Moyes in the summer.”

Potter would be brilliant for West Ham

While Moyes has done an exceptional job in east London, it does feel like the right time for the Scotsman to move on.

The 60-year-old doesn’t exactly have the full backing of the West Ham supporters at the moment and many want to see the club head in a different direction.

There are plenty of names being linked with the hot seat already, including Thomas Tuchel and Wolves boss Gary O’Neil.

Potter is also said to be under consideration by the West Ham board and despite a miserable spell at Chelsea, he could be an exciting option for the Hammers.

The 48-year-old’s stock has fallen after his dismissal from Chelsea but he’s already proven his credentials with Brighton.

West Ham currently have a host of talented attacking players and Potter’s style is one that would certainly excite supporters.
