Leeds United will be looking for a hero to step up to the plate in the final three matches of the season.
Leeds’ push for automatic promotion has hit a major stumbling block as of late having picked up just five points from a possible 15 available since the international break.
Thankfully due to the form of Ipswich Town and Leicester City, Leeds remain in the race. However, it is set to be a nail-biting finale after a ‘big week’ for Southampton, who are now very much back in it.
Leeds’ attacking players have been the stars for much of the season under Daniel Farke. Both Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter were, of course, named in the Championship’s TOTS on Sunday.
However, both have simultaneously experienced a drop off in form at the worst possible time according to Don Goodman, and it would be hard to disagree with that claim.
Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville struggling for Leeds
Both players have been tearing Championship defences apart all season, with their pace and dribbling ability having caused so many problems.
However, over the last couple of matches, they have not been so effective. Against Blackburn Rovers, Summerville failed to complete a single dribble, attempting only one.
Rutter, meanwhile, has been guilty of squandering possession a lot since moving into that number 10 spot. Perhaps a change of position could do him well for the last three.
Leeds have been guilty of forcing the play to Summerville in matches they have struggled in, but there is someone else in that front four that should be trusted more.
Farke must make Gnonto Leeds’ main main in run-in
One of the only Leeds attackers who has been stepping up lately is Willy Gnonto, with his injury over the international break arriving at such a poor time.
As the goals dried up around him, Gnonto scored six goals in nine starts after coming into the team for the injured Dan James in early February.
After two substitute appearances against Coventry City and Sunderland, Gnonto returned to the starting XI last weekend and immediately looked like Leeds’ biggest threat.
Gnonto was ‘excellent’ in the eyes of Farke, and was the only player looking to get shots off. He also setup a golden opportunity for Patrick Bamford at 0-0.
With that in mind, Farke needs to make the £3.8 million star his main man in the run-in. His decision to take him off against Blackburn was puzzling, and he can’t afford to make that mistake again.
James is a great super sub to have on the bench but that does not mean it has to be in place of Gnonto. He can be the man to fire Leeds to promotion.
