Maruoka Castle

Maruoka Castle was built by Katsutoyo, the nephew of Shibata Katsuie, on the orders of Oda Nobunaga as a measure against the Ikko Ikki uprising during the Sengoku period. It is the only castle tower in the Hokuriku region that was built before the 18th century and is designated as an Important Cultural Property by the national government.

Approximately 400 Somei-Yoshino cherry trees, which have been certified as one of the "100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan," are planted around the castle tower.

Tojinbo

Tojinbo is a national scenic spot and natural monument located in Echizen Kaga Coast Quasi-National Park.

The cross-sectional diameter of the columnar joints is over 4m at its largest, making it one of the largest in Japan. You can actually walk on the rugged rocks and look down on the Sea of Japan from the cliffs.

We also recommend taking a sightseeing boat and viewing the spectacular Tojinbo from the sea.

Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins

The Asakura Clan Ruins are the remains of a castle town where five generations of the Asakura clan ruled Echizen Province for 103 years during the Sengoku period. The entire townscape has been excavated almost in its entirety, including samurai residences, temples, town houses, craftsmen's residences and roads.

Excavations are still ongoing, and have unearthed a variety of valuable items, from tea utensils that give insight into the lifestyle and culture of the time to a variety of household items. In 2007, 2,343 of the excavated items were designated Important Cultural Properties.

It is a precious ruin that is one of the few in the country to have received three designations: "Special Historic Site," "Special Place of Scenic Beauty," and "Important Cultural Property."
