'I've learnt my lesson': West Ham ace admits he was wrong after Moyes openly criticised him

West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez incurred the wrath of David Moyes earlier this season.

David Moyes brought Edson Alvarez to West Ham from Ajax in the summer, and he has proven to be an excellent signing for us.

The Mexican has been exceptional for the Hammers over the past eight months, and that’s no surprise – Chelsea wanted to sign him before we got our hands on him.

However, he’s far from perfect, and has obvious flaws.

Alvarez was forced to sit out our Premier League games against Newcastle and Tottenham after picking up 10 yellow cards inside our first 30 matches.

The Mexican then picked up a suspension in the Europa League as well. He was forced to miss our first-leg clash with Bayer Leverkusen, and Moyes criticised him for his lack of discipline earlier this month (Evening Standard).

And now the 26-year-old has responded to the gaffer…

The former Ajax man seems to have grown up and realised that he cannot be so reckless in future when it comes to making tackles.

We’ve lost two and drawn one of the three games that he missed over the past couple of weeks, and he has to take full responsibility for that.

Alvarez has now admitted that he’s learnt his lesson, as quoted by WHUFC.com:

“It’s very frustrating, but I have learnt my lesson in terms of accumulating yellow cards. I watched the first leg at home with my family. It left a very sour taste, not only because of the result but because I couldn’t help the team out. It’s very frustrating, but I have learnt my lesson in terms of accumulating yellow cards.”

We will see over the final month of the season whether those words from the midfielder hold any weight.

Edson Alvarez is an incredibly aggressive player, so David Moyes won’t want him to lose that side of his game.

However, it’s the silly bookings that he needs to stop picking up – like the one he received during our 5-0 win over Freiburg last month.

Only time will tell as to whether he truly has learnt his lesson though…
