Two schoolchildren in France wounded in knife attack

A man slightly injured two primary schoolchildren with a knife in an attack in the French town of Souffelweyersheim.

The two children have been taken to hospital and a suspect has been arrested, police in the nearby city of Strasbourg, located on the border with Germany, announced on Thursday.

The attack took place in a square near the local school. Police said the attacker's motive remains unclear.

Psychological assistance has been organized for other pupils at the school, according to police.

According to media reports, the two victims are aged 6 and 11.

The 28-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the attack.

The BFMTV broadcaster reported that the attacker was not in full possession of his mental faculties, citing police sources.

The school kept other pupils inside the school building, which was locked down for security reasons after the attack, as worried parents gathered outside.
