‘They are being cheated’: Eddie Jordan thinks Formula 1 is making ‘very serious mistake’ with one current rule

Former Formula 1 team principal and owner Eddie Jordan believes that the sport is making a ‘very serious mistake’ right now.

We’re in the third season of the current regulations and so far, Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen have led the way with unprecedented success.

Eddie Jordan was speaking on the Formula For Success Podcast and reflecting on one big piece of news from the world of Formula 1.

Ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, veteran driver Fernando Alonso announced he would stay at Aston Martin beyond 2024.

The 42-year-old driver made a big call leaving Alpine for the British team at the end of 2022 but it has really paid off.

Jordan, however, believes Formula 1 is making a mistake that has allowed Alonso to race into his 40s.

He’s previously called the decision for all 10 teams not to hire any rookies in 2024 ‘scandalous’.

His frustration is only going to continue when the next set of regulations arrives in 2026…

Eddie Jordan believes Formula 1 is making a ‘very serious mistake’

Driving an F1 car certainly isn’t easy, but the days of drivers sweating from head to toe or having to lifted out of the car like they were in the days of Nigel Mansell are over.

The most extreme recent example was in Qatar last year when Logan Sargeant had to retire from the race due to illness and Esteban Ocon threw up in his helmet.

However, the cars are becoming more manageable and Jordan believes this is a mistake on Formula 1’s part.

New regulations are coming in from 2026 and there are some serious issues already arising in the early days of testing in the simulator.

Jordan would like to see these machines be more difficult to cope with to add to the difficulty of racing in F1.

Formula 1 rule changes making it more difficult for rookies to join the grid

Talking about modern F1 cars, Jordan said: “I do believe that Formula 1 is making a very serious mistake and that is that the car and the new rules with the weight of the car.

“They don’t sound right, they’re too heavy, they’re easier to drive than what we remember them to be able to do so and all you’re doing is playing into the hands of the older driver because it makes much more sense to hang onto what you’ve got and what you know.

“It’s better than what you don’t know and I think the old established teams, and I used to have this argument with Ron Dennis all the time.

“He changed afterwards, because he gave Lewis Hamilton the chance, but up to that he always had somebody who had been somewhere before or giving them a chance or whatever it was.

“I just think that young drivers are being cheated, they are being cheated, they need to get the chance.”

Which rookies could be on the grid in 2025?

Although Jordan believes Formula 1 is making a mistake with their current cars, he might not have to wait too much longer for some rookies to join the grid.

Mercedes appear to be leaning towards replacing seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton with Italian teenager Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

After his superb drive in Saudi Arabia, Oliver Bearman could be racing for Haas next season.

Meanwhile, Red Bull are hoping to find a spot for Liam Lawson on the grid in 2025.
