Phil Parkinson confirms Wrexham player will now have an operation as promotion secured

Wrexham may have won promotion to League One but Phil Parkinson and co do still have two League Two games left to play.

It may have got a little lost in the promotion party since last Saturday but the season isn’t actually over just yet.

Wrexham’s job was done with a 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers last week and there isn’t much left to play for right now.

Wrexham can’t win the League Two title now with Stockport County crowned as champions and a battle with Mansfield Town for second place may not be a huge priority with promotion already sorted.

Still, Phil Parkinson takes his side to Crewe Alexandra this weekend and will be backed by travelling Wrexham fans who will hope for one more great away day before heading to League One.

Perhaps Parkinson will consider experimenting with his lineup on Saturday afternoon, but he will still be without a couple of injured players.

Phil Parkinson on Jacob Mendy

Jacob Mendy picked up an injury at Grimsby and returned a couple of weeks later, starting in the away trip to Colchester United.

However, Mendy lasted just over half an hour and was substituted with another injury problem.

We haven’t seen Mendy since and Parkinson has now told The Leader that the Gambia international will be going under the knife.

Parkinson feels that this the best step with Mendy now having an operation in the hope of being ready to go for pre-season training.

“Jacob is going to have an operation,” said Parkinson. “If there is a positive to having an injury like that is the fact that we have already got promotion. He can have his rehab now through the summer and hopefully come back strong. Obviously no-one likes being injured but Kevin Mulholland and his team are working hard to resolve that problem.”

This means that James McClean is likely to continue at left wing back unless Callum McFadzean is given a chance to shine.

Parkinson on James Jones

Midfielder James Jones is also out of action hasn’t featured since the 1-0 win over Notts County back in February.

The Scot picked up a hamstring problem and hasn’t played since, which will have really frustrated Parkinson.

Jones has bagged four goals in 23 League One games this season and his absence has meant Parkinson losing the ability to rotate his engine room.

Parkinson has now indicated that Jones could return for the last game of the season against Stockport, but Wrexham won’t take risks with him given that there is nothing on the line in the next couple of games.

“James is getting closer but now we can just take our time with him. He may have a chance for the last game of the season, we will assess him and see how he goes this week. But we don’t need to take a risk with him now,” he added.

Seeing Jones back in action before the season ends would be a nice boost heading into the summer with the Scot potentially facing new competition.

Wrexham will surely look to add midfielders this summer and Jones may need to prove that he can make an impact in League One after spending months on the sidelines.
