For four games last year, Sherrone Moore put on the big headset as Michigan’s interim head coach.
Jim Harbaugh started out the year with a three-game suspension due to alleged recruiting violations during the COVID-19 dead period, and Moore served as interim head coach against Bowling Green. Then, when the Big Ten suspended Harbaugh for the final three games of the season due to the ongoing sign-stealing investigation, Moore again called the shots in his place.
This time around, the “interim” title is gone. Moore took over as Harbaugh’s full-time replacement after he left for the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL and is getting ready for his first season in the role. He was impressive during those four wins – including one top-10 win over Penn State and another over rival Ohio State – and Kris Jenkins saw first-hand what Michigan can be under his watch.
Between Moore’s success in the interim role and how much he loves the game, Jenkins said the sky is the limit for the new Michigan head coach.
“He has that passion for the game, man, and it is infectious,” Jenkins told On3 via Zoom. “You talk about enthusiasm unknown to mankind, he’s definitely got it way more than me and then some. You talk about somebody that’s gonna get you fired up to lead you to war, lead you to hell. That’s that man right there. He’s in every aspect of a coach that’s trying to get better, that’s trying to show the world.
“And for his debut last season, going … undefeated? His first mini-season as a head coach?”
Jenkins, of course, watched from the defensive side of the football in 2023 as Michigan won the national championship. That gave him a unique perspective to watch Moore operate as offensive coordinator in practice. But when he became the interim head coach, he stepped into Harbaugh’s shoes on game day and ran the whole operation.
So as Jenkins gets ready to head to the NFL as a projected second-round draft pick, he’ll be following his former teammates in 2024 as they play for their new coach. And he can’t wait.
“The type of infectious energy and the way he carries himself as a coach, he is going to make sure that we are all bred to be men standing on business,” Jenkins said. “That’s why Coach, he’s gonna do great things. And I’m excited to just watch him work, watch the boys work. Because they’re gonna do great things this season.”
