Netflix gains nearly 10 million customers in 2024 first quarter

Netflix continues to grow rapidly and clearly exceeded Wall Street's expectations in the past quarter.

The video streaming market leader added 9.33 million subscribers in the past quarter, it said in a Thursday letter to shareholders. On average, analysts had only expected growth of around 4.9 million customers.

Driven by strong user growth, Netflix also exceeded forecasts in terms of revenue and profit.

Netflix now has 269.6 million paying customers worldwide. The upward trend last year was triggered by the crackdown on password sharing beyond a single household.

At the same time, the service no longer wants to provide information on the current number of users every quarter from next year onwards. For market observers, this was previously an important indicator of the competition with Disney and other streaming providers.

Netflix shares fell by around 4% at times in after-hours trading on Thursday.

Netflix signalled that growth would continue.

For the current quarter, the service announced a year-on-year increase in revenue of around 16%. In the past quarter, revenue rose by around 15% year-on-year to $9.37 billion. The quarterly profit jumped from $1.3 billion a year ago to $2.33 billion.
