Glasner lifts lid on multiple major Palace blows for West Ham clash

David Moyes and Oliver Glasner meet again when West Ham head to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.

West Ham’s Scottish manager famously locked horns with new Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner in the Europa League two years ago.

Glasner was managing Eintracht Frankfurt as they took on the Hammers in the semi-finals.

They were feisty clashes with a red card in the away leg taking the tie away from West Ham.

David Moyes was sent off too in that game and served a European ban.

Now he will renew rivalries with Glasner at Selhurst Park, rather ironically days after being knocked out of the Europa League by another German team – Bayer Leverkusen.

West Ham put a lot into the two legs against the unbeaten Bundesliga champions.

Moyes and Glasner renew rivalries

It certainly showed in the Premier League last week when a jaded Hammers side put up a dismal resistance in a 2-0 home defeat to Fulham.

The Eagles go into the game against West Ham with a week of rest under their belt and bouncing after beating Liverpool at Anfield.

Glasner has Crystal Palace playing some lovely football already.

So it promises to be tough for the Hammers, even if they do welcome back Lucas Paqueta, Emerson Palmieri and possibly Konstantinos Mavropanos, Kalvin Phillips and Alphonse Areola too.

But the task may be made a touch easier by serious team selection issues for Moyes’ opposite number.

The Austrian has confirmed he will be without as many as NINE key Palace stars for the meeting with the Hammers on Sunday.

According to The Evening Standard Glasner has confirmed midfield star Jefferson Lerma was injured against Liverpool and won’t be available to face West Ham.

The paper also states Rob Holding, Cheick Doucoure, Sam Johnstone and star defender Marc Guehi have all been ruled out.

If that wasn’t bad enough for Palace, Matheus Franca (groin), Chris Richards (knee), captain Joel Ward (groin) and Will Hughes (knock) are also big doubts for this weekend.

“Rob Holding, Cheick Doucoure, Sam Johnstone and Marc Guehi have all been ruled out,” the report states.

Eagles could be missing up to nine players

“Matheus Franca is still coming back from a groin injury that has kept him out since early March, and is doubtful to make the squad. Chris Richards has been absent since late March with a knee injury, and is hoping to return in time for the West Ham game. Oliver Glasner has not confirmed if he’ll make the squad.”

Standard reporter Dom Smith added further team news on X, which gave some hope Holding might be available but confirmed the glut of injuries.

“Glasner says Lerma injured himself against Liverpool and is out until at least Man United,” Smith said.

“Holding has trained all week. Richards, Ward [groin] and Hughes [knock] are doubts for this weekend.”

With Man United and Newcastle not in Premier League action until midweek next week, West Ham can leapfrog both and go sixth in the table with a win at Selhurst Park.

A win for Palace would not move them above 14th place.

The two sides drew 1-1 at the London Stadium in the reverse fixture.
