Richard Keys says Jurgen Klopp did something that 'killed Liverpool' this season

Richard Keys has now pointed the finger at Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool suffer a disappointing end to the 2023/24 campaign.

The Reds can still win the Premier League title – of course – but that is all there is to play for after Atalanta knocked Liverpool out of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

A 2-2 draw against Manchester United and a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace has left Liverpool in the familiar situation of needing Manchester City to slip up, if the Reds are to win a second Premier League title.

However – while writing on X – Richard Keys actually blamed Jurgen Klopp for ruining Liverpool‘s season…

Richard Keys says Jurgen Klopp did something that “killed Liverpool”

Well, the BeIN SPORTS pundit has completely disregarded significant injuries to Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota at a crucial time of the season for Liverpool.

Instead, Keys has blamed Klopp’s decision to announce his exit in January as the reason for Liverpool’s 2023/24 campaign fizzling out.

The 66-year-old said: “It’s such a shame that our clubs have done so badly this past week but congrats to Aston Villa. Let’s hope they go on & win it now. Emery has done a fantastic job. Sadly it’s beginning to look as though Klopp’s ill judged announcement has killed Liverpool not lifted them.”

Nonsense

Liverpool have won 13 games out of 19 played since Klopp shared his news on January 26th – losing just four and drawing two.

Two of those defeats have come in the last eight days, so we aren’t quite sure how Keys has made the connection between the announcement causing poor results of late.

There is an argument to be made for Klopp potentially announcing his exit too early, but it was a major decision, and Liverpool needed as much time as possible to prepare for life after the German.

Even with months of notice, the Reds still seem no closer to finding a replacement, after Xabi Alonso decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, Julian Nagelsmann signed a new contract with Germany and Ruben Amorim’s son asked him to stay in Sporting CP.

Nevertheless, that is a problem for Michael Edwards and FSG to solve – nobody can justifiably say that Klopp’s announcement derailed Liverpool’s season whatsoever.
