Screen legend now uses wheelchair after suffering stroke but he kept working

Home Alone 2 and The Rocky Horror Picture Show actor Tim Curry has been in a wheelchair since having a stroke in 2012.

“Let’s do the Time Warp again…” If you knew those words and instantly began humming, singing along in your head or even aloud, then the name Tim Curry will already mean something to you. The British actor and singer struck fame for the iconic role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He went on to star in the likes of Home Alone: Lost In New York (he played the concierge, Mr. Hector), the 1990 Stephen King novel adaptation It (Pennywise the Clown) for TV, and Muppet Treasure Island (Long John Silver). However, his life and career one day took a pivot…

Tim Curry suffered a stroke in 2012 and remains in a wheelchair

Now 78 years old in the year 2024, Tim sadly suffered a stroke back in the summer of 2012.

A year previous, he pulled out of starring in a production of Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead in Chichester and London, citing poor health as the reason. The Daily Mail reports he was said to be experiencing debilitating asthma attacks in the aftermath of a chest infection.

Since the stroke, Tim has been using a wheelchair to get around but keeps his private life exactly that: private. Along with the aid of a wheelchair, he also underwent physical and speech therapy to help with mobility, interaction, and performance.

Speaking in 2015 during a red carpet appearance at the 19th annual Actors Fund Tony Awards Viewing Party, Tim gave a welcome update on his health. “I’m doing well and I’m looking forward to it,” he told Los Angeles Magazine, referring to the organization’s lifetime achievement award he was set to receive.

“I’ve done a few benefits for the Actors Fund and I think it’s a marvelous organization,” he added. “I hope not to have to use it.”

Tim Curry continued to shine as a voice actor post-stroke

Although live-action roles became a challenge, Tim was no stranger to taking on voice roles pre-stroke and afterward embraced his immense talent for voicing a range of characters.

TV Projects he came aboard include Star Wars: The Clone Wars (he voiced Chancellor Palpatine/Darth Sidious), Wonder Pets (Tin Man), Ben 10: Omniverse (Dr. Joseph Chadwick, Stage Manager), and Over The Garden Wall (Auntie Whispers).

He even reprised the voice of his iconic Dr. Frank-N-Furter role in the 2020 Rocky Horror Show: Livestream Theater.

Although the roles have become less prolific in more recent years, Tim also remains a singer and has become a much-loved presence at a range of fan conventions, meeting those who adore his work. It’s all incredibly wholesome, and we’re not alone in declaring that Tim was, is, and will always be a treasure.
