‘I expect’: EFL pundit Carlton Palmer issues verdict on where Wrexham will finish in League One

Following their promotion to League One last weekend, Carlton Palmer has given his verdict on where he thinks the Reds will finish.

With the ambitious Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds at the helm, Wrexham have shot up from the National League to the third tier of English football in two seasons.

After failing to win promotion in their first two campaigns, the Hollywood superstars are celebrating back-to-back promotions for the first time in their 159-year history, doing so in style with a 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers.

Wrexham are tipped to splash the cash in League One with their projected wage budget of £6 million placing them towards the top end of the third tier.

Given they’ve got a squad that is far too good for League Two and are only expected to build on that this summer, many think the Reds can challenge towards the top end.

It’s common to watch promoted teams take the level up by storm. You only have to look at Ipswich, who are currently challenging for Premier League football despite being promoted to the Championship last term.

With a huge budget to splash on quality players, Wrexham will want to follow in similar footsteps and Carlton Palmer believes they will.

Speaking to Football League World, the former Sheffield Wednesday player said: “I think Wrexham, with deep pockets, I think they could go again.

“I think Wrexham have signed good players, and Stockport have done the same, they have signed players that were better than the league they were playing in, and both of them I expect to be at the top of the league next season.”

Stockport won the League Two title at a canter by thrashing Notts County on Tuesday night. They boast a similar budget to Wrexham, with Palmer believing both teams will take the third tier by storm.

Wrexham have to adapt to League One

Wrexham have several players capable of playing in the third tier, including Paul Mullin, Elliot Lee, Max Cleworth and Andy Cannon.

While that is the case, and many more will be added in the summer transfer window, the Reds have to be adaptable in the third tier.

Phil Parkinson was able to use a 5-3-2 system throughout this campaign, and at times, it has been exploited by League Two opposition.

With the step up in quality that promotion brings, the Wrexham boss will need to create a plan B to fall back on, as there will be times when his usual system doesn’t work.

He must have several formations to choose from depending on the opposition he’s against, as that will only make his side less predictable and harder to play against.

Hopefully, Wrexham can nail their recruitment in the summer and take League One by storm, fulfilling Palmer’s prediction in the process.
