Earlier on April 19, Russian Defense Ministry announced the crash of a Tu-22M3 strategic bomber in Stavropol Krai on its way back after a sortie. The ministry claimed "technical malfunctions" caused the accident.
Later, Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk said that together with the HUR, Ukrainian forces have destroyed a Russian Tu-22M3 aircraft. These bombers regularly launch cruise missiles at Ukrainian cities.
A national security source told NV that the bomber was shot down by a modified Soviet-era S-200 air defense system from about 300 km away — the same means previously used to hit a Russian A-50 early warning and control aircraft.
