In the wake of a man setting himself on fire outside the New York courthouse where Donald Trump's hush money trial is taking place, witnesses speaking to the press said they saw him throw a number of multi-colored "papers" in the air before setting himself alight.

MSNBC reporter Yasmin Vossoughian, who saw the incident unfold as she was broadcasting live, said she has "gotten a glimpse of some of those papers" that were found scattered around the man after police put out the fire with fire extinguishers. She said they, "Seem to have some vast conspiracy theories" written on them.

"That is all we know. Whether or not that leads to a motive as to why this individual did something so horrific like this to himself is to be known," Vossoughian said.

A witness who was standing outside the courthouse where the incident took place said he saw the man pour liquid over his head before using what looked like a cigarette lighter to ignite it. Before doing so, he threw a pile of papers in the air, The Washington Post reported.

The witness, identified as Dave, who also spoke to Vossoughian, "Was visibly shaken and did not want to discuss his condition but said it 'took police quite a while to get here, and he was on fire,'" The Post's report stated.
