Edson Alvarez says only 1 thing was said in the West Ham dressing room before Leverkusen clash

Edson Alvarez has opened up on the one thing was said in the West Ham United dressing room before the Bayer Leverkusen clash.

And it should be a big learning curve for David Moyes.

West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez put in a superb performance for his team against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League on Thursday night.

In truth, the same can be said for every Hammer who took to the pitch. It was a really positive night for the club all-round.

There were two sour notes though – the fact that we couldn’t beat Leverkusen by two clear goals and Lucas Paqueta’s absence at the London Stadium.

That said, every single fan who left the London Stadium on Thursday night, and those watching from their TV screens, would have had an immense feeling of pride.

The only thing that stopped us from progressing through against the German side was our lack of strength in depth.

Xabi Alonso was able to make big changes from the bench whilst Moyes floundered. At the end of the day though, the players gave maximum effort, and that’s all we can ask for.

The Mexico international was absolutely brilliant for the Hammers against Alonso’s side.

Alvarez racked up five tackles, two clearances, one block and one successful aerial duel against Leverkusen (Who Scored).

He epitomised what it meant to be a West Ham player on Thursday night.

And now the 26-year-old has lifted the lid on the pre-game team-talk inside the Hammers dressing room…

Alvarez told reporters after the game how there was only one thing said pre-game, as quoted by AS:

“Clearly you feel a lot of frustration, but that’s football. They also controlled the game a little more in the second half with the score in their favour. The only thing that was said in the locker room was that, no matter what happened, we had to leave happy and proud of what we did on the field.”

That has to be a lesson learned for Moyes and his players.

The only message heading into each one of our final five games needs to be go out there, take the game to the opposition and leave everything on the pitch.

It really is very simple. We have been far too passive as a team this season, and that has to change now after Thursday night’s performance against the Bundesliga champions.

Edson Alvarez has made it very clear how the West Ham players and Moyes approached the Leverkusen game. Now there’s no excuse not to do the same for every single team we play.
