'His agents have spoken to Liverpool': Journalist says 'world-class' manager has now put himself forward for Reds job

Liverpool are currently in the process of recruiting for a new manager to take the reins from Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

The Reds boss stunned the football world earlier this year when he announced his intention to step down from the Anfield role.

Links quickly surfaced between Liverpool and Xabi Alonso following Klopp’s announcement, but he has since told the press he intends to stay with Bayer Leverkusen.

With that in mind, the Reds have focused their efforts elsewhere, with Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim said to be a leading candidate for the job.

Amorim isn’t the only manager Liverpool have been linked with, however. Other names have been doing the rounds.

One of those is Niko Kovac, who previously managed Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg.

Now, BILD journalist Christian Falk has provided an update involving the 52-year-old’s representatives and Liverpool.

What has Christian Falk said about Liverpool and Niko Kovac?

Falk, writing on The Daily Briefing, says Kovac’s agents have touched base with Liverpool over the soon-to-be vacant manager’s role.

However, the Reds don’t seem to have him high up on their wish-list, even though he is in the picture, added the reporter.

“Manager Niko Kovac was most recently released in Wolfsburg,” wrote Falk in quotes transcribed on GiveMeSport. “Suddenly he is considered a candidate for Liverpool FC.

“He himself publicly downplays the interest. However, I learned that his agents were actually in England. It is also true that his agents have spoken to Liverpool.

“The result: Kovac is not one of the top candidates at Liverpool. But it is also true that he is on an extended list of candidates who are not yet an issue but which the club is monitoring.”

Kovac has been deemed a ‘world-class’ manager by the Bundesliga website in the past, and he’s currently without a club, so Liverpool wouldn’t have to pay compensation with him.

However, his stock isn’t that high at present, having been sacked from his last job, and his spells at Bayern and Monaco didn’t end on a high note either.

Liverpool will probably prioritise a manager who has good recent experience of winning major trophies and whose stock is at its highest, such as Amorim.
