BBC pundit 'hates' what he has just said to describe Rangers defender Connor Goldson

Is Connor Goldson nearing the end of his Rangers career? Well, one BBC pundit has effectively suggested his whole career is now winding down.

The Englishman has been a fantastic servant for the Ibrox giants since being brought to the club by Steven Gerrard in 2018 for a fee of £3m.

As per Transfermarkt, Goldson has donned the Light Blue jersey 309 times under a host of different managers and continues to be trusted under the current regime led by Philippe Clement.

But that trust is fading amongst Rangers fans, particularly after his last few displays which culminated in a very poor individual performance in the drab Dundee draw in midweek.

Goldson has been accused of stabbing Clement in the back alongside the likes of captain James Tavernier and John Lundstram due to the trio’s failure to provide leadership at the most crucial of times.

Rangers’ Scottish Premiership title hopes have almost been shredded to pieces as a result and for a sympathetic Derek Ferguson, Goldson has been a factor in that.

Derek Ferguson delivers ‘old man’ Goldson admission

Former Gers midfielder and BBC pundit Ferguson does not feel comfortable admitting that Connor Goldson resembles ‘an old man’ now on the pitch for Rangers which he says was exemplified versus Dundee.

Ferguson made his comments on the Open Goal podcast, with host Si Ferry initiating the conversation.

Ferry informed the panel that Kenny Miller would replace John Souttar in defence with Leon Balogun against Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi-final on Sunday.

Ferguson then stepped in by saying: “Not for Souttar, for Goldson. I just think that Goldson looks like an old man at this minute. And I hate saying that.

“It’s a horrible thing seeing that last night (Wednesday against Dundee), did you see at the end of the game when Goldson, the ball’s played in behind him and he turns to get after it?

“Did you see it? He wasn’t under any pressure. It was just a ball coming over his head and he turned under no real pressure and he couldn’t move. It’s a shame.”

Should Goldson leave Rangers this summer?

Have we ever seen Goldson play as poorly as he did at Dens Park? A clean sheet was kept but shouldn’t mask the problems he’s having at the moment.

The 31-year-old – who has played 48 games this season – looks lethargic and seems to be devoid of real concentration and focus at a time when that has to be at its peak.

Rangers are sleepwalking to an extremely disappointing second-placed Premiership finish at this rate.

By sticking with the likes of Goldson, Tavernier and Lundstram, the squad isn’t going to evolve at a quick enough pace in the future.

It’s time now in the summer for Goldson to be thanked for his service at the club and moved on because his performances of late have been worrying, as Ferguson alludes to.
