Loretta Lynn First Tried Pot When She Was 84 Years Old

Loretta Lynn was never one to keep things hidden, and she was very open about the fact that she had tried marijuana — but in a crazy twist, she was 84 years old at the time, and she vowed never to touch it again.

Lynn was never part of the Nashville party scene, but she ended up smoking pot on the advice of her doctor, who recommended it for medicinal purposes.

“I got glaucoma and they gave me one of these cigarettes,” Lynn told People in a 2016 interview.

“I took one smoke off of it and it hit me right here in the chest,” she added. “I like to have died! Glaucoma is just going to have to take over.”

Though Lynn was not a fan of pot, she was a huge fan and friend of Willie Nelson, despite his own well-documented fondness for weed.

“He’s one of the greatest people in the whole world,” she said in the same interview. “I know he smokes pot, but my goodness, there’s a lot people doing a lot worse than smoking pot!”

That just illustrates Lynn’s live-and-let-live approach to life, which was often seasoned with a dose of good humor.

Loretta Lynn died at her longtime home in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., on Oct. 4, 2022. She was 90 years old.
