'For me...': Paul Merson says there's only man who can replace Ten Hag at Manchester United right now

Manchester United take on Coventry City tomorrow in what could end up being the biggest game of Erik ten Hag’s time at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag takes his United team to Wembley knowing that a win is a must and that if they do lose, then he will come under even more pressure from supporters.

The Dutchman is already fighting for his job.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS now involved at United, there is even bigger pressure on Ten Hag as the new ownership assess its options ahead of the summer.

Of course, replacing Ten Hag with the right man would be another matter. England boss Gareth Southgate has been linked, but United fans haven’t received that rumour too well.

And speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday just now, Paul Merson believes there is only one man for the job.

Speaking about tomorrow’s semi-final and what that could mean for Ten Hag’s future, Merson believes a change is needed and there’s only one man for the job.

“What lose out? Get beat by Coventry? Wow! He would be lucky if he got back on the coach. Would you? It cannot happen. It could happen, but there’s no way he would be back in the job. I think something has got to change here anyway,” Merson said.

“Personally I think they need someone like a Ancelotti. I know it’s a quick fix, and I know Man United don’t need a quick fix, but if you watched the game the other night, Ancelotti is getting superstars to run themselves into the ground, superstars to run themselves into the ground, to leave nothing left on the pitch. That’s what I don’t see at Man United.

“For me, they need to win the FA Cup to have any chance of him keeping his job, in my opinion. Again, it would only have to be Ancelotti. I don’t see anybody else going in at Man United. I know it’s a quick fix, as I said, but they need to get back to basics. They need top players that are not even in the same breath as some of the players at Real Madrid to be working like the players at Real Madrid are. And, I don’t see that at the moment at Man United.”

Carlo Ancelotti should have been at Manchester United years ago

Now 64, Carlo Ancelotti is one of the best and most experienced managers in the world.

But the reality is that while he would do a good job at United right now, he should have been brought into the club some time ago.

United seem to have missed the boat on Ancelotti many moons ago and for him to come to Manchester now would surely take a big shift.

He is comfortable at Real Madrid, well-liked, and successful.

United, then, might have to look elsewhere once again.
