‘Move got blocked’: £30k-a-week Fulham player says he very nearly signed for Arsenal

Arsenal have a number of stories of players they almost signed.

From Kylian Mbappe to Cristiano Ronaldo, almost every top player has a story of how they almost joined the Gunners.

However, now, a slightly smaller name to say the least has spoken about how they almost joined the Gunners.

Indeed, speaking on The Big Interview with the Premier League, Fulham’s Tim Ream has shared how he almost joined Arsenal instead of Bolton Wanderers when he first came to England.

Tim Ream nearly joined Arsenal

The £30k-a-week defender spoke about almost joining the Gunners.

“Owen Coyle when signing you said something very interesting. I don’t think it was picked up on that much, that you were followed by some big teams including Arsenal. How close were you to joining Arsenal at one point?” Ream was asked.

“That move got blocked actually. With the way MLS works the club doesn’t own you, the league owns your rights. After my rookie year there were conversations between my agent, Arsenal, MLS, New York and there was this big thing going on. I don’t know how close it was, I just said to everyone ‘either get it done or don’t. If it’s done let me know, if not I don’t want it hanging over me as a cloud.’” Ream said.

Tim Ream could’ve been brilliant for Arsenal

Tim Ream is an interesting player.

He spent most of his career in the Championship, but he’s shown over the past two seasons that his technical ability is up there with the very best in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola told him after Fulham’s game against Manchester City last year that he would sign him if he was 10 years younger, and Arsenal could’ve done just that.

Under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger, perhaps Ream could’ve reached his peak a lot sooner and been a Premier League star for Arsenal.

Sadly, we’ll never know, but it is interesting to ponder the type of player Ream could’ve become if he’d signed for Arsenal when he was younger and worked under a top manager.
