Brendan Rodgers reacts to wild Hampden drama after Celtic beat Aberdeen in Scottish Cup

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been giving his reaction to a dramatic afternoon for the Bhoys at Hampden.

The teams played out a roller-coaster 3-3 draw after extra time, but Celtic came through a penalty shoot-out test to book their place in the Scottish Cup final.

Aberdeen were ahead in the match early thanks to Bojan Miovski before Nicolas Kuhn equalised for the Bhoys prior to the interval. James Forrest had his team ahead in the second half but there was a last-gasp equaliser for the Dons through an Ester Sokler back post header.

Matt O’Riley looked to have won it in extra-time with a cool finish but, remarkably, Aberdeen netted a near-identical equaliser to their first in the closing moments of that period too.

A crazy penalty shoot-out then occurred with Joe Hart missing a potentially winning penalty of his own before saving the fateful spot-kick to win 6-5.

Brendan Rodgers on Celtic and Aberdeen tussle

Speaking to BBC One Scotland after the match, Rodgers said: “I need a therapy session after that. What a game for neutrals watching. Credit both teams, Aberdeen did fantastic – they had nothing to lose but came and played really well – we had to dig in after a slow start. I’m just happy to be in the final.

“We had the chances. We just needed to have a little bit more care with the ball. We just couldn’t see it through [before the penalty shoot-out].

“I had in my mind, I had a flash of Anton Rogan. Bless him, he missed a penalty against Aberdeen. I was thinking don’t be the next Irishman in that position, please. I’m really proud of the team. The supporters were brilliant for us.”

Celtic double is still on

Having opened up a three-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership and now booked their place in next month’s showpiece final, Celtic are in a very strong position to secure a league and cup double.

Given some of the low points this season and a lack of winning consistency at times, it would be a remarkable end to Rodgers’ first season back as manager.

He’s never lost a game in the Scottish Cup, winning on an incredible 16 occasions now. It’d be a brave person to bet against him extending that to 17 in the final against Hearts or Rangers, who play tomorrow.

Given today’s events though, Celtic have to be wary of some of the potential twists and turns ahead. Nothing is going to be easy.
