Report: Liverpool insiders say Michael Edwards has still not ruled out hiring 'left-field' manager

Liverpool are not yet certain on who will be taking over from Jurgen Klopp this summer.

The Reds have just six games of the season remaining, meaning there are just half a dozen more matches of Klopp’s reign left.

What happens next at Anfield is going to be intriguing in the extreme. With so little of the campaign left to play, FSG are still seemingly yet to enter into final negotiations with any managerial target.

By listening to certain areas of the press, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Ruben Amorim was all but confirmed to be the next Liverpool manager. There have been claims that the Sporting boss has an offer on the table from the Reds.

However, the truth appears to be a little murkier. In fact, Liverpool insiders are now suggesting that Michael Edwards could be about to do something totally unexpected.

What is Michael Edwards planning at Liverpool

If you polled a group of Liverpool fans on who they’d want as their next manager, plenty would probably go with Amorim.

However, it’s also worth mentioning that many of them would likely have never heard of the 39-year-old just a few short months ago.

It’s a fact of Liverpool’s search for their next coach that there are simply no real outstanding names in play. Ever since Xabi Alonso ruled himself out of the running, the race has felt especially open.

As we exclusively revealed earlier today, journalist Graeme Bailey has claimed that this could mean the Reds end up making a ‘shock’ appointment.

And now, the Liverpool ECHO has backed that up. They claim that sources within the club have ‘not ruled out’ the possibility that Edwards will ignore the clamour for Amorim and hire a ‘left-field’ option.

FSG’s CEO of football will reportedly make the decision based on who he thinks ‘can lead the team to a new era of success.’ It seems that this could be a name not yet mentioned, or named only sparingly. The process with Amorim is also said to be ‘not that far down the line.’

Who could Liverpool’s left-field appointment be

This information does not necessarily rule someone like Amorim out of the conversation. However, it does make it worth looking at other candidates.

The one Bailey put forward to us as being the most likely ‘outsider’ is Bologna’s Thiago Motta. But it seems like Juventus do have the edge in that race.

Other than Motta then, perhaps Feyenoord manager Arne Slot could come into consideration. Or maybe Liverpool will go down the Mikel Arteta route and look at someone like Borussia Dortmund assistant manager Nuri Sahin.

Heck, if they think he’s the right man for the long-term, then maybe Fernando Torres will even get an interview. Who knows. Some fans my be concerned. But we think this just got interesting.
