Erik ten Hag has tested £70m Man United player in different position ahead of Coventry clash - Fabrizio Romano

Erik ten Hag has been testing out one Manchester United player in a new position ahead of the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry on Sunday.

This weekend’s clash at Wembley signifies the Dutchman’s last chance of winning a trophy this season, after finishing bottom of Group A in the UEFA Champions League, while also being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle back in November.

Ahead of the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry, which could actually be his last cup game in charge of the Red Devils, the 54-year-old has been experimenting at Carrington – according to Fabrizio Romano.

So, what has Erik ten Hag done? Let’s take a look…

Erik ten Hag tests Casemiro in new position ahead of Manchester United vs Coventry

Well – according to the reliable journalist – Casemiro has been tested in a new position during training after Willy Kambwala became the latest central defender to suffer an injury at Old Trafford.

Romano wrote: “Harry Maguire is the only centre back fit and available for Man United vs Coventry. Varane, Lisandro Martínez, Evans Victor Lindelof and Willy Kambwala are all out injured. Understand Erik ten Hag had to test Casemiro as CB with Maguire as emergency solution.”

The Italian says it was a “test” for the Brazil international – suggesting it is a new experience for the South American.

However, Casemiro has actually played as a central defender on six occasions throughout his career – according to Transfermarkt.

The £70m man should be able to cope

The Manchester United No.18 has played in this position once for the Red Devils following his £70m move from Real Madrid in August 2022, which came in a 2-0 win against Burnley in the Carabao Cup Fourth Round back in December 2022.

Casemiro has also appeared in the centre of defence four times for Real Madrid, and once for Sao Paulo.

Therefore, you would like to think the 32-year-old can handle himself as part of the backline against a Championship outfit in Coventry, with all due respect.
