Fabrizio Romano shares what he thinks of Arsenal's transfer interest in Newcastle star Alexander Isak

This summer looks like it will be a fascinating one for Newcastle United.

While Eddie Howe’s team may still finish this season strongly and earn Europa League qualification, few would doubt it has been a frustrating one for Newcastle.

After the rapid-fire upward trajectory of the Howe reign under PIF, a lack of consistency has offered something of a reality check.

Clearly, there are reasons for that. Not all too many of last summer’s signings have worked out just yet and the unrelenting injury crisis Newcastle have had to deal with has not made things easy.

Still, such is the level of ambition from the owners, it would not be a surprise to see Newcastle rebuild this summer.

The extent of it, however, remains uncertain amid FFP limitations.

As such, key players are being linked with a move away.

Bruno Guimaraes might have recently hinted at staying on Tyneside long-term following the purchase of a £4m home in the area but is believed to have interest from the likes of Manchester City.

There is thought to be a begrudging acceptance behind the scenes that the midfielder will at some point leave – albeit Newcastle have not yet given up hope of keeping him for another season.

Then, there’s Alexander Isak.

The striker is said to be on Arsenal’s radar this summer, although Howe reportedly wants to build around the Sweden international going forward.

Now, noted transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has shared what he really thinks will happen with Isak and the Gunners.

Fabrizio Romano has offered latest thoughts about Arsenal and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Romano said of Isak and Arsenal: “With Isak, I think it will be more than difficult and more expensive because Newcastle will fight to keep him at the club, so it won’t be easy.”

Selling Alexander Isak would be a disaster for Newcastle

Losing either of Guimaraes or Isak would be a massive blow for Newcastle. There is little point trying to put a positive spin on it.

Still, at least with Guimaraes, there’s believed to be a release clause in play. If a team comes in and pays £100m, there’s little Newcastle can do about it.

The same isn’t said to be the same with Isak. Unless a truly gargantuan offer emerges, why would Newcastle sell?

He’s been hailed as a “generational talent” by pundits and is surely in the form of his life. At 24, things can only get better.

Arsenal would have to pay some serious money to sign him.
