Rangers v Hearts – Player ratings

Philippe Clement was looking to add to his league cup trophy as Rangers manager, this is how his players faired:

Jack Butland – 8

Made one smart stop from the second phase of a set piece but would have gone to VAR and been ruled out for offside.

Butland didn’t know that though.

Stunning stop in the 90th minute to save a nervy last few minutes.

James Tavernier – 7

Great work for Cyriel Dessers’ goal, won possession by pressing high up and then slipped in Todd Cantwell.

Dujon Sterling – 8

Defensively solid, and tried to pressure his opposite number higher up the park.

Got to the by-line on a few times after the break and grew in confidence.

Leon Balogun – 9

In for the dropped Connor Goldson and was solid with and without the ball, never seems flustered.

Outstanding second period from the veteran, never put a foot wrong.

John Souttar – 7

Given more responsibility in terms of progressing play out from the back and was resolute in his defensive duties too.

Got caught on the ball a couple of times in the second-half but was covered.

John Lundstram – 7

Much improved with Mohamed Diomande alongside him, however, he nearly gifted Alan Forrest a chance in the first-half with one of a few loose passes.

Todd Cantwell – 9

Involved in almost every good passage of attacking play as well as providing the assist for Dessers opener, teammates needed to find him more.

Should have had a second assist after a stunning run but the same target couldn’t finish at the first time of asking.

Mohamed Diomande – 8

Provided much-needed assistance for Lundstram in midfield, some nice touches but looked a but rusty on occasions.

Ran the game in the second-half alongside Todd Cantwell.

Abdallah Sima – 5

A huge blow to see him go off so early after what had been a positive start.

Cyriel Dessers – 8

Lovely finish for the opening goal after an early opportunity went begging.

Made up for ruining Todd Cantwell’s mazy run by not scoring first time by showing the composure to beat Craig Gordon for the second time.

Rabbi Matondo – 4

A couple of nice runs but also gave possession away a few times in good areas, should have added a second for Rangers in the first-half.

Looks a different player when he starts, and not in a good way.

Substitutes

Ross McCausland – 5

Came on early for Abdallah Sima, started deeper but soon realised he had the beating of Stephen Kingsley.

Fabio Silva – Couple of decent moments where he did well before choosing the wrong option.

Missed a sitter wth a couple of minutes left after great work from Dessers and Tom Lawrence.

Borna Barisic – 6

On to replace Dujon Sterling who had put in a great shift.

Nicolas Raskin – 7

First appearance for a while and was full of running, looked keen to impress.

Tom Lawrence – 7

Nearly forced his way into a 1v1 with Gordon but his touch deserted him just at the final moment.
