Danish Conservatives pick Mona Juul to replace deceased former leader

The Danish Conservative People's Party has elected Mona Juul, 56, as their new leader following the unexpected death of the party's previous leader Søren Pape Poulsen, the Danish news agency Ritzau reported on Sunday.

Pape Poulsen suffered a brain haemorrhage during a meeting of the party's executive committee in March and died shortly afterwards. He was 52 and had been party chairman since 2014.

Denmark's public broadcaster called Juul's election "the world's smallest surprise." She had been unanimously nominated and had no opposition.
