Report: Newcastle are now optimistic for a double deal in key area as new £25m signing eyed

Surely few would doubt that Newcastle United need to strengthen in central defence this summer.

Indeed, that was reportedly the plan for Newcastle last summer too, but FFP constraints meant the transfer budget simply did not stretch that far.

While it remains unclear as to exactly how much money the club will be able to spend there amid more FFP issues, the signing of a new central defender is thought to be on the cards.

Long-term injuries to both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles has left Eddie Howe very light in that area.

Though Howe has spoken positively about playing Dan Burn there, relying on him and Fabian Schar as the only recognised senior centre-backs next season would be a major worry.

It should be of little surprise, then, that the club are being linked with a move for a new defender.

Now, a name has emerged.

Newcastle could have decided who they want to replace the injured Sven Botman

According to the Daily Mirror, the club are ready to sign two centre-backs this summer.

There is believed to be hope that they can get two players in that position through the door at St James’ Park ahead of next season.

Spanish U21 international Dean Huijsen is currently on loan at Roma from Juventus and is thought to be a leading £25m target on Tyneside.

Borussia Dortmund are also believed to be keen on a player who has already received a ringing endorsement from one Jose Mourinho.

The report cites a quote from the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss (linked with Newcastle himself) as saying: “He is one of the highest quality prospects in European football at this age level. He will be a great footballer in the future.”

Newcastle desperately need new defenders

Even if Botman and Lascelles were fit, there has been a huge drop-off in Newcastle’s level of defending this season.

The Premier League’s joint-best backline last season have already conceded the second-highest number of goals (52) in the top half of the table.

Goals scored (69) hasn’t been a problem, with only the top three scoring more.

At least Newcastle know where their priorities must lie ahead of the summer window…
