Two men in custody after pedestrian seemingly deliberately run over

Investigating authorities in Germany suspect that a pedestrian who was killed in the western city of Mönchengladbach was deliberately run over, a police spokesman said on Sunday in response to an enquiry.

The pedestrian died of his serious injuries in hospital after the incident, he said.

A driver hit the 33-year-old with his car on Friday and then sped off. There was also a passenger in the car. The two occupants are believed to be 19 and 21 years old. They were later apprehended after they had parked the car and fled.

The police and public prosecutor's office assume that the offence was premeditated. According to the spokesman, the victim and the two young men in the car probably knew each other.

Nothing was initially known about the background or the nature of the relationship between the men.

A murder squad is investigating.

A magistrate ordered the two suspects to be remanded in custody on suspicion of murder on Saturday.
