'Never gets mentioned': Jeff Stelling says Manchester United player should've been sent off before full-time yesterday

Jeff Stelling has suggested that many are overlooking that one Manchester United player should have actually been sent off before extra-time on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s men have just about booked their ticket to Wembley. But they were given an unbelievable scare by Coventry City in their FA Cup semi-final.

Manchester United appeared to be cruising at one stage, leading 3-0 against the Championship side.

However, Coventry fought back in the final 20 minutes, scoring three times to take the game to extra-time.

Jeff Stelling thinks Manchester United star should’ve been sent off against Coventry

Just as United were looking to see the contest out, Andre Onana was booked for time-wasting before he took a goal kick.

It was a sign that Manchester United were indeed fearing becoming the laughing stock and playing their part in one of the most incredible FA Cup comebacks of all-time.

And speaking on talkSPORT, Jeff Stelling has suggested that not enough has been made of what Onana did next.

The Cameroonian then decided to head by the side of his goal and take a drink. And with that, Stelling believes that the 28-year-old should have quickly seen another yellow card.

“By the way, just one thing that never gets mentioned, gets overlooked, I just want to say Andre Onana shouldn’t have been on the field for the penalty shootout,” he said.

“He’s been given a yellow card after 85 minutes by Rob Jones. And what does he do? He goes behind his goal, picks up his water bottle, takes a drink of water. If Rob Jones had had any bottle, he’d have shown him another yellow card immediately because the goalkeeper was taking the mickey out of the referee.”

Another key moment as Andre Onana avoids red card

It may not have changed the result, but it would have certainly made a real statement had Jones sent Onana off.

At some stage, a goalkeeper is going to receive a second yellow card for time-wasting. It does appear that many are aware that officials are highly unlikely to send them off and thus, take as much time as they want.

Onana definitely called the referee’s bluff in that moment. And ultimately, Stelling is absolutely spot on in that the referee did fail to act as he should have done.

For Coventry fans – and neutrals – it was another moment to wonder what could have been for Mark Robins’ side.
