‘He may struggle’: Alan Shearer says Liverpool’s 25-year-old could miss out on Euro 2024 this summer

Alan Shearer says there may not be a place for Liverpool’s 25-year-old in England’s Euro 2024 squad this summer.

With only five games left now until the end of the season, the summer is creeping ever closer. It’s a summer that promises plenty of excitement for football fans.

Euro 2024 and the Copa America is both set to take place during the middle of June until mid-July. Which means even without Liverpool games, there will be plenty of entertainment.

Especially since there are going to be a lot of Liverpool players involved in the two tournaments. Although according to Alan Shearer there is one Liverpool player who may not make the England squad in what could be a surprise to many.

Alan Shearer on why Trent Alexander-Arnold may miss out on England squad

Despite being one of the best players of his generation in world football, Trent Alexander-Arnold hasn’t yet quite found his place in the England squad.

At 25-years-old, he has never been a regular under Gareth Southgate, and has actually recently mostly played in midfield for the Three Lions rather than his preferred right-back position.

But after watching the kind of form he returned from injury and seeing his goal for Liverpool last night, it still seems inconceivable that Southgate would omit Alexander-Arnold from the England squad.

The Liverpool right-back simply deserves to go to Euro 2024, and could be a huge asset for the England team in their aspiration to win the tournament.

Although, according to Alan Shearer, that might not be the case and Alexander-Arnold may miss out on the squad.

“I don’t see is at that straight forward.” Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast.

“If it’s a squad of 26, he has a much better chance, if it’s a squad of 23 then I think he may struggle to get in. Maybe not Madders, either.”

Alexander-Arnold’s world-class numbers and why he deserves to go to Euro 2024

According to Wyscout, Alexander-Arnold ranks in number one spot for the following metrics in the Premier League this season:

  • Passes to the final third (13.78 per 90)
  • Passes to the penalty area (6.03 per 90)
  • Progressive passes (14.87 per 90)
  • Through passes (3.16 per 90)

Given he is a leading figure in such key metrics in England’s top flight this season, it would be utterly ludicrous for Alexander-Arnold to miss out on Euro 2024.
