Dentist shows a simple test to see if your breath smells bad

Cosmetic dentist Dr. Joyce Kahng has revealed an easy way to find out if you have bad breath and it only takes a few seconds.

Dr. Joyce boasts over a decade of experience in cosmetic dentistry and is the owner of Orange + Magnolia Dental Studio in Costa Mesa, California.

Dr. Joyce has gained millions of followers on social media for sharing her knowledge of dentistry and oral health and one of her videos helps you crack the age-old question – does my breath smell bad?

She explains the “Lick Test”, which requires you to lick your wrist and wait for a few seconds until it air dries.

Take a little whiff once your wrist is dry and if it smells unpleasant, you suffer from bad breath. The foul odor is caused by the sulphur on your tongue that sticks to the wrist when licked.

For the unversed, the tongue hosts odor-causing bacteria, which upon reacting with amino acids in the food produce smelly sulphur compounds.

In the same video, Dr. Joyce reveals an easy method to fix bad breath. She previously served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Southern California Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry.

How to fix it

The dentist suggests TheraBreath mouthwash to gargle twice a day to get rid of bad breath.

However, if you don’t pass the lick test despite the use of mouthwash twice daily, there may be other underlying issues responsible for how your breath smells.

According to the Mayo Clinic, certain foods, lifestyle habits, and health conditions are among various causes of bad breath.

Foods such as garlic, onions, and spices are major contributors to foul-smelling breath, whereas smoking is known to only make it worse.

In some instances, bad breath can also be caused due to infections of the mouth and other health conditions. It’s best to seek professional advice if none of the home remedies for bad breath work on you.
