Derby County boss Paul Warne should sign 'outstanding' 28-year-old to replace James Collins - opinion

Derby County were 1-0 victors on the weekend away against Cambridge United and are now on the verge of returning to the Championship after a two-season absence.

Paul Warne‘s side now need only a point in their final-day clash against Carlisle United to secure automatic promotion.

Behind the scenes, transfer plans will be drawn up ready for the reopening of the summer window, as The Rams are expected to have several players departing at the end of their contracts.

James Collins, who has netted 13 goals this term, is one player who could leave on a free at the end of June.

With that said, here is one ‘outstanding’ goal machine Derby should sign to replace Collins.

Barnsley forward Devante Cole has enjoyed a productive campaign at the promotion hopefuls, netting 18 times in 45 outings.

Only Portsmouth’s Colby Bishop and Charlton Athletic’s Alfie May have scored more goals in the second tier this term.

Cole, who is the son of Manchester United legend Andy, is out of contract this summer and could be available on a free transfer.

With Barnsley still hoping to bounce back to the Championship, perhaps his future at Oakwell depends on if they go up via the play-offs.

The 28-year-old has become a much more polished striker during his second spell at Barnsley and will be hungry to prove himself at a higher level having had a taste for it earlier in his career.

Devante Cole could be the perfect partner for Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has played as a centre-forward at times this season, partnering with Collins in a front two.

Mendez-Laing, who is naturally more creative, could form a good understanding with Cole – a willing runner in behind the last line of defence.

Their profiles, on paper, would certainly complement each other well so Warne should seriously consider launching a proposal for the Barnsley man, who would be a no-risk signing given he’s expected to become a free agent.

Partnering the top assister in League One with the third top scorer would be a mouth-watering proposition.

Admittedly the step up to the Championship is a big one but the pair both have experience at that level.
