Bulgarian interim premier Glavchev takes on foreign minister role

Bulgarian Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev has sacked his foreign minister after just two weeks in the job, and took over the post himself on Monday.

As the reason for dismissing Stefan Dimitrov, Glavchev said the foreign minister had been insufficiently supportive of Ukraine.

At the same time, Agriculture Minister Kiril Vatev was replaced by Georgi Tachov, who previously served as the head of the office for EU agricultural payments.

Glavchev's interim government took office on April 9 with its main task organizing early parliamentary elections after the previous pro-Western government collapsed. The elections will be held to coincide with elections to the European Parliament being held June 6 to 9.

Dimitrov, who previously served as ambassador to Montenegro, had been accused of poor communication during the night of Iran's missile and drone attack on Israel on April 13.

He had also been accused by Bulgaria's pro-Western camp of not giving enough backing to military support for Ukraine in the war against Russia. This did not match the policy of Bulgaria as an EU and NATO member, the critics said.
