Pakistani forces kill 11 militants after spate of deadly attacks

Pakistani troops have killed at least 11 Islamist militants after a surge in shootings targeting government officials in a volatile north-western region near the Afghan border, the military said on Monday.

At least 10 militants were killed in an operation conducted after an intelligence tip-off in the region of Dera Ismail Khan, the military said.

Militants had killed several officials from the Pakistan customs department as well as civilians in the same region in separate attacks over the weekend.

Another militant was killed by commandos in a raid in North Waziristan, another region on the Afghan border.

It was not clear which group the slain militants belonged to. The Pakistani Taliban have been behind previous attacks on security forces and civilians in the region.

The Pakistani Taliban - separate from the group now in power in Afghanistan - have killed a total of about 80,000 Pakistanis in decades of violence.

They were pushed back in a series of offensives since 2014, but have been seeking to regroup in Afghanistan since the fall of Kabul to the Afghan Taliban.
