Derby County star Nathaniel Mendez-Laing now tops League One for impressive statistic

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has emerged out on top of an impressive League One statistic.

Mendez-Laing has enjoyed a stellar season for Derby County this term and is widely regarded as one of the best players in the division.

The 32-year-old, who has Premier League experience, has struck nine goals whilst laying on 16 assists this term.

His output has fired Derby into the top two and on the verge of securing automatic promotion back to the Championship.

Mendez-Laing ranks top of the assists chart in the third tier, though, that isn’t the only playmaking statistic he sits at the summit of.

The former Cardiff City wide player has been one of Paul Warne‘s standout performers this term and is certainly the most creative across the squad.

According to Sofascore, no player in League One has created more big chances than Mendez-Laing, with Peterborough United’s all-action full-back Harrison Burrows ranking second.

Further, after his winning strike against Cambridge United on the weekend, he also has the most goal contributions in the division, clocking in at a remarkable 25. Charlton Athletic’s Alfie May joins the list with 24 as does Portsmouth’s Colby Bishop.

The Guatemalan playmaker has captained The Rams over the last few weeks, evincing his growing importance and leadership in the dressing room.

Picked up on a free transfer following his Sheffield Wednesday departure just under two years ago, he’s been a phenomenal signing.

The future is bright for Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

Having penned a new contract running through until 2026 in January, the future is bright for Mendez-Laing, who still has so much to offer despite turning 32 earlier this month.

It appears the forward will be a fixture of Warne’s side over the coming seasons and he certainly has the experience to step up a level if The Rams do indeed seal promotion this weekend.

Throughout his 14-year career, Mendez-Laing has made just shy of a century of appearances in the second tier.

He had a brief season in the Premier League with Cardiff during the 2018/19 campaign, netting four times in 20 appearances, including a brace away at Old Trafford.

So there is little doubting his ability to transition to a higher level, particularly if Derby chiefs are able to partner him with a willing runner in attack.
