MSNBC cuts Trump off mid-rant to hit him with fact-check

Donald Trump's rambling rant outside of his courtroom as the first day of testimony ended Monday was so littered with false information that MSNBC cut from it to fact check.

Chris Jansing stepped in to explain that viewers who overheard the impromptu speech may be misled.

"But we should do a number of fact-checks," Jansing clarified. "First of all, this is not a case about $130,000 payoff. Again, it is not illegal to pay hush money. That is not what this case is about. This case is about the falsification of business records to the end of impacting what was going to be a very close election."

Trump also clainmed said that many experts — including prosecutors — claim it was a legitimate case, which is also not true.

"It is true that the previous district attorney decided not to pursue it, and in the beginning, [Alvin] Bragg declined," Jansing said. The Manhattan district attorney "took office in 2022 and decided not to bring the financial fraud case. But, soon, he revisited it and very clearly became the architect of a strategy."

MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell said that it's clear Trump is working to minimize the seriousness of the case by claiming that it was just a "bookkeeping error" or an internal battle with his lawyer. But, she said, that isn't what the issue being addressed by the case.

Among other claims Trump made is that something like this has never happened before, and he repeated his assertion that it was a political witch hunt.

"No former president has ever allegedly done the things that he's done," said Mitchell. "He's saying that the federal government is doing this, this is political. This has nothing to do with the federal government."
