Rasmus Hojlund names footballing ‘God’ as best striker of all time ahead of his Man Utd idol, he ‘needed to watch him’

Manchester United star Rasmus Hojlund admitted that one “special” legendary World Cup winner is the best striker of all time ahead of his footballing idol.

Rasmus Hojlund arrived at Old Trafford last summer after Manchester United splashed a hefty £72m transfer fee to sign him from Serie A side Atalanta.

The 21-year-old Danish forward initially struggled to score in the Premier League, with Hojlund enduring a tough period in the final third for the Red Devils.

Despite scoring five times in six Champions League appearances, Hojlund went his first 14 Premier League matches without finding the back of the net for United.

Erik ten Hag kept faith with the Denmark striker and Hojlund finally broke his drought in the Premier League in the 3-2 comeback win against Aston Villa in 2023.

Hojlund was in a rich vein of form at the start of 2024, with the former Atalanta man scoring in five consecutive Premier League matches for the Red Devils.

The Denmark international, who scored six times in five matches across January and February, was later sidelined after he suffered a muscle injury.

Man Utd star Hojlund names best striker

Rasmus Hojlund has since returned from his period on the sideline and the Manchester United striker has struggled to recapture his goalscoring form.

The United star hasn’t found the back of the net in his last four Premier League matches, despite Erik ten Hag once again keeping faith with Hojlund.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Hojlund took part in a fan Q&A and the Danish forward was asked who was the best striker of all time.

The ex-Atalanta striker is a big admirer of Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo and Hojlund said that the Al Nassr superstar is an idol for him.

Despite initially saying that he would pick Cristiano Ronaldo, Hojlund admitted that the 39-year-old Portuguese forward was not a natural out-and-out striker.

The United star revealed that his pick would be none other than Brazil legend Ronaldo, who “could do everything” on the pitch.

“I would say Cristiano, but Cristiano was also a winger, so an out-and-out striker probably in terms of ability is probably R9, I think,” Hojlund said.

“He could do everything. So I have to say him.”

Hojlund on Ronaldo’s impact in Italy

The presenter in the Sky Sports video admitted that he was surprised Hojlund picked Ronaldo due to his age, but the United star spoke highly of the Brazilian’s impact.

Ronaldo had a prolific playing career at club level and with the Brazil national team, with the 47-year-old considered one of the best strikers of all time.

The two-time World Cup winner famously left Barcelona in 1997 and signed for Inter Milan, with Ronaldo scoring an impressive 59 times in 99 appearances for the club.

However, Ronaldo’s spell at the San Siro was plagued with injuries and the ex-Brazil and Barcelona striker returned to Spain in 2002 after he signed for Real Madrid.

Hojlund admitted that Ronaldo, who briefly played for AC Milan after his spell with Real Madrid, is “more or less of a God” in Italy and he even studied him.

“No, I’ve been playing in Italy, so I know how… I needed to watch him because he’s more or less of a God there because of his time in Inter and late on at AC,” he said.

“But yeah, he was special and he was a talent.”
