Kalen DeBoer reveals what he does to unwind during the offseason

Kalen DeBoer hasn’t had much time to himself since accepting the head coaching job at Alabama in January. He immediately got to work by making coaching staff hires, talking to current players on the roster and scouring the transfer portal for new ones.

From there he went right into spring practice, getting his first opportunity to work on the field as the Crimson Tide head man. Alabama wrapped that up with its annual A-day game a couple of weeks ago, meaning DeBoer will finally get a little bit down time with the summer months ahead.

It’s not as if his schedule will be completely clear. The spring portal window doesn’t end until April 30 and the team will still have its summer workouts. However, it will be a nice change of pace from what he walked into and he’s definitely earned a few days off.

He joined Roger Hoover for the “Hey Coach!” Show on Monday where he discussed how he plans to spend some of them.

“It’s all my family and football, honestly,” DeBoer said. “It doesn’t show, but if I can get out to play a round of golf in or something. I probably get maybe five or six rounds in a year. So that’s not much. A lot of times three of those rounds are happening within a week or something. So that leaves a lot of other weeks where there’s not much being played.

“My family, friends, catching up with them. But a lot of it’s just time spent with my family. With my daughters being the age they are, they’re busy with activities.”

Golfing is a hobby that DeBoer has in common with his predecessor Nick Saban, who recently participated in a celebrity golf tournament following his retirement. Fans will also hope they can find similar success on the field as DeBoer aims to keep the dynasty that Saban created rolling.

DeBoer comes to Tuscaloosa after leading Washington to an appearance in the College Football Playoff title game this past season. His first game as the Alabama coach will come Aug. 31 against Western Kentucky.

Kalen DeBoer addresses national championship expectations in Year 1

DeBoer spoke about expecting a championship in his first year leading Alabama Football, one of those programs with year in, year out title hopes, on ‘The Next Round’ on Thursday. He said that those kinds of presumptions, as well as the demand that comes with them, is why he and every single player are in Tuscaloosa to begin with.

“Yeah. I mean, in all honesty, like, that’s what you come here for, right?” DeBoer said. “You come here and there’s going to come a point in time where there’s a lot of pressure going into a week or going even into a moment of a game.”

“The thing I’m always reminding the guys of is this is why you came here, you know,” said DeBoer. “That’s why I came here too, you know, is to be a part of that, having those expectations.”
