'A winner': Anthony Gordon says he's inspired by Liverpool player who is an 'absolute machine'

Anthony Gordon has named the Liverpool player who helped inspire the way he prepares for games, insisting that he is an absolute machine.

Anthony Gordon has been one of the standout players in the Premier League this season. The Newcastle United winger is having an outstanding first full campaign on Tyneside.

He has scored 10 goals and contributed eight assists in 30 top-flight games. Certainly, Newcastle have been vindicated for signing him in the first place. And Gordon is knocking on the England door ahead of Euro 2024.

The youngster may perhaps put his form partially down to the preparation he does before a game.

Speaking on The Overlap, Gordon suggested that he will often visualise what may happen in a fixture in the days immediately before.

That left Gary Neville quite stunned as few players have spoken to him about their preparation in such a way. But Gordon suggested that he is aware of Mohamed Salah doing similar.

“I’m absolutely mesmerised in a way that I’ve never heard a football player talk actually with this level of depth and thought and preparation, I don’t think at any point in their career, let alone someone who’s at your stage of your career,” Neville said.

“There may be people who do the same thing. Probably there’s loads who just haven’t spoken about it. But like I said, some footballers like to think less and just turn up and play and trust their instincts. But I just love the mindset of just getting in that place before I’m already there,” Gordon replied.

“And actually, I heard Salah talk about it. And that’s where I took even more interest because I see him as an absolute machine, a winner. People like that, you’re not going to go far wrong following what they do.”

What many criticising Mohamed Salah this season are completely overlooking

Certainly, there is unlikely to be a better role model for Gordon than Salah.

The Egyptian has established himself as one of the best players the Premier League has ever had. His record of 156 goals in 258 games is remarkable and puts him alongside the best.

And while his form has been a little underwhelming of late, Salah’s numbers are so much better than many give him credit for. He has scored 17 times in the league this year. And he has also provided nine assists.

Salah’s consistency is frightening. And given the way he looks after himself, there is little reason why he cannot continue to play at a very high level for years to come.

Of course, it is going to take something special for anyone to emulate Salah. But you can definitely understand why Gordon takes inspiration from the Liverpool star.
